Music Therapy Major

Passion for music is a beautiful thing – and even more beautiful is being able to share it with others. Through ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s music therapy major, you’ll gain both skills in music and a background in psychology, so you can learn how to use your talent to help others heal.

Why Choose a Music Therapy Major at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø?

SU’s music therapy major is the first and only undergraduate program of its kind at a public school in Maryland and the Delmarva region. The major is currently pending accreditation approval from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), but as part of the Jackson Music Program, it has all the bells and whistles, and our graduates take their talents to incredible heights.

Our music therapy major is designed for students who wish to pursue careers as board-certified music therapists in clinical settings. We offer close mentorship by expert faculty and hands-on experiences to give you the skills required of music therapists, including accompaniment, improvisation and performance proficiencies in piano, guitar and voice. You’ll also get a background in psychology and biology courses, as well as an internship. By the time you graduate, you will have valuable practical experience and knowledge. You will be eligible to sit for the national board certification exam offered through the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT), and apply for state licensure.

For those interested in this area of study, SU also offers a music major with tracks in instrumental performance, music technology, teacher certification and vocal performance. Students apply to the university and also audition for acceptance into all music degree programs.
